This machine is an enhanced version of the VA-17. The model designation is an abbreviation of Vollautomat Rückübertragung Elektronisch – fully automatic calculator with electronic back transfer. The back transfer is done through a series of printed circuit boards, wiring harnesses and relays appended to the standard VA-17. This is an extension of the technology developed for their Multiquick series of accounting machines, which connected a calculating machine to a typewriter.

This machine was the last mechanical calculator developed by EMBEE (Mathias Bäuerle), and was produced for little more than two years. Although all EMBEE calculator production ceased in 1964, the company is still in existence today as a manufacturer of paper folding machinery (www.mb-bauerle.de).
